Becoming a Better Boss Secret 19: Personalities

As a boss, you work with a variety of people – and personalities. Interestingly, extensive research has shown that there are distinct personality styles that humans share, and it is quite possible to understand natural personality traits.

In 1928, Dr. William Marston published his book “Emotions of Normal People.” He introduced us to four primary emotions and identified behaviors associated with those emotions. Marston’s work is known to many as DiSC® – Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.

Today, there are many assessments available to help us understand personalities. Whether you use Marston’s model or any of the many personality assessments available, it is important to first identify and understand your own natural behaviors and strengths. Then, you can begin to understand the natural behaviors and strengths of the people around you – which means we can predict behavior. Amazing!!

What We Know
  • We need the natural strengths of all types of people in our workplace.
  • Understanding the natural strengths and challenges of our employees equips us to produce engaged, motivated, happy employees.
  • Most people will naturally seek work where they feel most comfortable – the place where they can do what they are good at doing.
  • We can successfully adjust our own style to improve relationships and achieve better outcomes. We need to master these skills and teach our employees how to do the same.

You can expand your knowledge of personality differences, and that of your employees, to make your workplace a happier and more productive place to be. The importance of helping people to understand and create healthy workplace relationships cannot be overstated.
